CAUTIONARY TALES #1

Image
Cautionary Tales is a fantasy film about identity following a man called Aaron who was left with an unusual facial disfigurement after a bizarre incident as a young boy. The film follows Aaron's ventures into public settings in which he is subjected to the ridicule that he evidently fears. Later in the film, he goes to seek comfort in the friendship of similar outcasts at a local support group. All of the character's disfigurements are based on old wives tales (there is a man with curly hair who ate all his crusts, a girl whose face stayed after pulling a silly expression in the wind, a girl who ate apple seed grew an apple tree inside her body, the boy who stayed in the bath for too long). I found that the film manages to combine two opposing elements: the ability to make the audience laugh and cry while appreciating the simple cleverness of this innovative idea. This is a rarity that a film would be able to generate both of these opposing reactions in just under 7 minutes. Al...

Change of plans

During the process of planning for our coursework project, we decided to take the story in a different direction. The new plot I believe has more substance and has a new element of risk which will hopefully engage the audience's interest. The new spot features the main character who is revealed to be a stalker by the end although this is not initially clear to the audience. The main changes -   in the original plot, there was a key focus on the sound of the wind and the ticking of the clock. We have decided to keep the ticking sound and replace the wind sounds with a white noise which will highlight his confusion. Instead of staying indoors throughout the film (with the exception of the outdoor scenarios he has created) we have decided to create a scene in which the character goes to meet the girl but is left disappointed when she has someone else waiting for her. Instead of keeping the cast at one main actor with minimal cameos we have decided to extend the cast to have three ap...

Sound

Sound is another area of importance and focus in our coursework, along with visuals, and we hope to achieve this through an absence of spoken word and by placing an emphasis on particular non diegetic sounds and tracks being played in the background. POINTS OF AUDITORY FOCUS Some of the key sounds that are essential to story of our film include: The ticking of clock as time passes - This will hopefully highlight how time seemingly passes slowly for the main character as he has only his thoughts for company. The longer he stares at the clock and the louder it ticks, the slower time seems to pass for him until he can see his girlfriend which only intensifies his inner turmoil.  White noise  - the use of white noise will mimic the ringing of ears heard in emotionally intense situations which will convey the emotional strain of the main character throughout the film  POTENTIAL BACKGROUND MUSIC Oh Wonder - All We Do Graham Coxon - Walking All Day Son Lux - Altern...

Beginning to plan...

Over the past week, we have began to plan the details of our A2 coursework and we think we have established the basis of our idea for the main plot of the short 5 minute film.

Visuality

The visual element of our coursework short film is critical to the plot and to the overall end result we hope to achieve for multiple reasons. For this film, our main goal is not to create an entertaining film, but rather a satisfying and artistic short film that those who appreciate cleanliness and neatness of the execution of films from these particular genres. COLOUR THEMES The aim for the project is use a number of muted colours with a particular emphasis on dark greys, black and faded white shades. This will contribute to the solemn atmosphere of despair that is initiated by the wind in the background. This will contrast the costuming of the woman who will be wearing a bright colour, preferably red to symbolise the theme of love and to set her apart in the scene MISE-EN-SCENE Photographs  Room layout - bed in a corner  Dark lighting  Dark colours for costuming for the main character and red for the woman FILMING LOCATIONS  Grace's House Finagh...
